The square foot garden boxes are finally up with seeds and transplants in the ground. Scott was a real trooper building the boxes and grids for me – and since there was a torrential thunderstorm the night that we filled them, I am really happy that we stapled the weed fabric on the bottom. On the whole they held up nicely!
This will be my first “real” year trying square foot gardening - I tried dabbling at it last year, but didn’t get the book and just tried my best from internet tips and hints. The book is much, much better. (So says the librarian!) I have the updated 2006 edition and there were some great new ideas in it from the 1981 edition.
The only one that I cringed at was “laying” the tomatoes down and planting them sideways. I hope my grandfather doesn’t turn in his grave – but so far – so good.
My current super happy garden event is my new water barrels – we had rain on Friday, and even though the real downpour didn’t start until night time, both barrels were full by 2:00pm. Last year’s drought did a number on my garden, and we are still on water restrictions. Here’s hoping the water barrels will keep my vegetable garden alive this year without wasting water!
